Social Media @ Autumn Forum

Today was 105M’s Autumn Forum. One of the workshops was about Membership, Leadership and Communication. It was the section on communication which I found the most useful.

Social Media is how young people are increasingly communicating and delegates were being encouraged to utilise twitter, facebook, blogs and websites as part of their club’s communication strategy. It was quite sobering to realise that only three clubs have facebook pages and a mere two twitter accounts. My own club has only just created a twitter account and  facebook page and we are still getting used to posting and tweeting.

What really intrigued me though was the demonstration of QR codes at the end of the session. Like mini bar codes which can be read by smart phones, they seemed to me to be a definite step in the right direction. The potential to use them in any PR or advertising campaign seems immense. Place the code on a poster and let it link to a website with more information. Use it to put a link to an online map or use it on business cards. So, all I need now is a smart phone and then I can experiment.
